Feedback and Evaluation

April 5, 2010

in News

I made a posting on how we’ll do grading and evaluation for this class here. (I want to keep long posts off the news page)

Final Projects

April 3, 2010

in Assignments,News

A description of the final project has been posted here. Its long, so I didn’t put it in the news.

Short version: start thinking about what you want to do, and we’ll work together to develop it into a project plan.

The week in 838: April 5-9

April 2, 2010

in News

Hard to believe there are only 5 weeks left!

This week we’ll learn about 3D perception, and get started on projects. Information on the projects is posted.

  • Tuesday, April 6 – We’ll talk about 3D perception (or, the perception of 3D shape, to be more precise). There is a reading that you need to comment on.
  • Wednesday, April 7 – You will need to send email with the rough idea for your project (instructions in the project post). It is important that you do this so the instructor can help you narrow things down (and discuss it in class). If you don’t pick a project, we will pick one for you.
  • Thursday, April 8 – We’ll talk about projects. Hopefully, this will relate to what everyone wants to work on. Or maybe I’ll use it as a time to discuss some of my projects.

The Design for America contest is challenging the community to come up with information visualizations of some available government data.

The first 3 challenges (in the “Data Visualization” category) might make good final projects. (info on that coming soon)

Class Feedback

March 18, 2010

in Assignments,News

As a reminder, part of your assignment was anonymous feedback on the class so far.

If you haven’t given this to me, you can email it to me and I’ll print it out in a batch with the others. If you’re not comfortable with that, you can leave it in my (Michael Correll’s) mailbox on the 5th floor of CS.

We’re getting to the end of the design challenge, and will look forward to other things!

  • For Tuesday (3/16) – we’ll talk more about Color. Remember to do the reading/commenting!
  • For Thursday (3/18) – the final design challenge handins are due. We’ll talk about visual comparisons some more, and about projects.

This week in 838 we’ll wrap up the Design Challenge (remember the final writeups) as we start talking about color.

  • Tuesday (3/9) – Color – be sure to do the reading (and post a comment). A lot of this might be a review of the stuff you might have learned about color in an intro graphics class like CS559.
  • Thursday (3/11) – Comparative Visualization – we’ll discuss how we use visualizations to make comparisons amongst complex things. I might use this as a chance to present some of my ideas on the “science of comparison” (although they are somewhat unformed), we might use the time to talk about the design challenge (since everyone should have commented on everyone else’s design). Or we might use it as a chance to plan for the rest of the semester.

The week in 838 (March 1-5)

February 24, 2010

in News

The first week in March will be centered around the Design Challenge. But on Tuesday, we’ll keep working through Colin Ware’s Book.

  • Tuesday (3/2) – We’ll discuss mid-level vision and layout – the reading assignment is Chapter 3 of Visual Thinking for Design. You need to comment on the reading before class. We’ll probably use some of class time for groups to interact.
  • Thursday (3/4) – We’ll look at the initial solutions to the Design Challenge. Each group will get (approximately) 10 minutes to present their solutions. The domain experts will be there to discuss. We’ll have a projector (and my laptop if you want to bring things on a USB stick or the web – or you can bring your own laptop). Remember to post a description of your initial solution(s) before class. More details about the mechanics of the Design Challenge will be made available as we figure them out.

The Week in 838 (Feb 22-26)

February 22, 2010

in News

(sorry, this post was scheduled to appear last week, but the WordPress scheduling mechanism doesn’t work 🙁 )

This week, you’ll be working on the Design Challenge and will have done the first readings on Perception.

Class will be a little odd because of some timing constraints and to give teams time to meet.

  • February 23 (tuesday) – We’ll start our conversation on Perception discussing the readings. We’ll stop as if it were a “normal” (50 minute) class to give teams time to meet. Also, I will be giving a talk in the physics department (if you’re curious to see what I have to say).

Chaos and Complex Systems Seminar:

On Tuesday, February 23, 2010, 12:30-1:30 p.m. in 4274 Chamberlin Hall, Michael Gleicher, UW Department of Computer Sciences, will speak on “Pictures from piles of data.”

ABSTRACT: Most of my work is focused around a single (broad) question: How can we use our understanding of human perception and artistic traditions to improve our tools for communicating and data understanding? In problems ranging from molecular biology to video editing, we are faced with a deluge of data. In this talk, I’ll survey some of the ways we’ve tried to turn this problem into solutions. I’ll discuss our efforts in scientific visualization and multimedia, showing how we can use ideas from art and perception to create novel tools for a range of problems. Time permitting, I might also discuss some of my efforts to create a cross-disciplinary course on Visualization.

Refreshments will be served.

  • February 26 (thursday) – we’ll continue the discussion of perception and visual cognition. We’ll also take some time to talk about the design challenge – possibly to discuss some of the topics that you wish you knew more about (but won’t get to see until later in the semester).
