Graphics Beyond 559 (summer and next year)

Short version: If you think you like Computer Graphics (the subject and/or the class), please come talk to me. (This is an occassion where sending email is OK).

There are many opportunities to be involved in graphics things beyond the class:

  • Summer opportunities – we have opportunities for students work on projects of all kinds. There are opportunities to work for pay or for credit.
  • CS559 Peer Mentors – we would like to have peer mentors for CS559 next year (fall and spring). These are paid positions. You can ask Jay about the experience.
  • Fall project opportunities – there are opportunities to work on projects for credit or pay during the academic year.

If you think you may be interested in any of these things, please contact me: send me email, come to office hours, or even say hello after class one day.

The Curve for the Midterm

As you would expect in a graphics class, the curve is a piecewise polynomial!

The curve is a continuous function – we map to numbers in the range 0-4, but we don’t round. We’ll do rounding when we compute the final grades. We consider boundary cases carefully when we determine grades at the end of the semester.

The Median for the exam was 26. If you scored the median or above you got better than a B.

If your score is below 25, your grade is: 3 * (score-10)/15 (no one scored less than 10)

If your score is above 25-34, your grade is 3 + (score-25)/10

If your score is 35 or above, your grade is 4.

Exam grades

We have the “raw” exam scores.

However, I am not going to release them until I can tell you what the curve is.

The median score is about 25/26 of of 39.

I expect to post an answer key this evening, and grades on or before Friday.

Lecture 14 Materials

Don’t worry if you don’t get the rotations stuff the first time through. It is challenging, and usually takes looking at it multiple times and working with it a bit.

The Week in CS559: Week 8 ( Mon, Mar 11 – Fri, Mar 15): More 3D

This is a slightly unnusual week, for reasons you should already know…

Week 8 ( Mon, Mar 11 – Fri, Mar 15): Meshes and Shape in 3D

Mon, Mar 11: Workbook 06: 3D with Three assigned
Tue, Mar 12: Lecture: Meshes and Rotations
Tue, Mar 12: Evening Midterm (7:15-9:15pm)
Thu, Mar 14: Lecture: Lighting and Shading
Fri, Mar 15: Workbook 06: 3D with Three due

The big thing this week is the exam on Tuesday night. 7:15-9:15 in 3650 Humanities. There are 10 people who have been given an alternate time and place for the exam. (they should know who they are)

The other unnusual thing this week is that this week’s workbook is last week’s workbook. Workbook 6, which was originally assigned last week is now due on Friday, March 15th. But this is a hard deadline. (think of it as we moved Monday to Friday for this week). Workbooks will resume their regular schedule after break.

Change of Plans (Exam, WB6, WB7)

A slight change of plans:

  1. The exam will include material up to, and including Tuesday (March 5ths) lecture. Workbook 6 is still required, but only the parts that relate to what was discussed in class.
  2. We are pushing back the due date of Workbook 6. It has a single “drop dead” due date of Friday, March 15th (rather than March 11th).
  3. We expect to make workbook 7 available before Friday March 15th (for those of you who want to get a head start on it over break). It will be due on Friday, March 28 (April 1 as the “drop dead” date). Workbook 8 will be due the following week.
