On Monday, February 21st and Wednesday, February 23, we’ll read some more recent papers that extend the basic motion synthesis and editing frameworks that we’ve been reading about. One big goal here is to help you think of project ideas. (and to better understand motion synthesis and processing by seeing the coolest latest and greatest).
Its hard to chose just 2-3 papers to discuss, so instead, I’ll give a list. If there’s another one you’d like to see added to the list ask me, and I’ll consider it. Not all papers are making this list.
Not everyone will read everything. But we’ll have some mechanism to distribute the papers and the learning.
For Monday, February 21st, each person needs to read one from group A and one from group B. Each project 1 group is responsible for having read all 4 papers from each group. (so either each person reads 2 papers, or everyone reads all 8, or somewhere in between)
CHANGE: For Monday, you should read the papers quickly and come up with questions to ask. Please post your questions early!
For Wednesday, February 23rd, each person needs to read one more paper (of course, if you have already read more than 2 papers, you’re done). For this, papers in group 3 are fair game, although you might want to read about something that sounded cool in class.
CHANGE: for Wednesday, you can focus on the papers you’ve already looked at for Monday, but hopefully with a deeper understanding thanks to answering questions in class on Monday.
For Friday, February 25th, you’ll probably have some conversations with your group as to project ideas. You’ll be glad you read a diversity of papers!
For each paper you read (at least 3), you need to post a comment describing the key idea of the paper (e.g. how), what it is can do (e.g. what/why), … Do not post the comments on this page. There are separate pages to post comments for each group of papers. (one, two and three).
Papers group one:
- RachelHeck , Lucas Kovar, and Michael Gleicher. "Splicing Upper-Body Actions with Locomotion." Proceedings of Eurographics 2006 in September 2006. [PDF] Second Best Paper Award. (project page with pdf and video)
- Tomohiko Mukai and Shigeru Kuriyama, "Geostatistical Motion Interpolation", ACM Transactions on Graphics, Vol. 24, Issue. 3, pp.1062-1070, 2005. (project page with PDF and video)
- Manmyung Kim, Kyunglyul Hyun, Jongmin Kim, Jehee Lee. Synchronized Multi-Character Motion Editing. ACM Transactions on Graphics (Proceedings of SIGGRAPH), 2009. (project page with pdf and video).
- Bidirectional Search for Interactive Motion Synthesis. Wan-Yen Lo and Matthias Zwicker. Computer Graphics Forum (Eurographics 2010). (project page with everything) (PDF since the link on that page might be broken)
Papers Group Two:

Papers Group Three: (now totally optional – but you might look at them for project ideas)
- Chai and Hodgins. Performance Animation from Low-dimensional Control Signals, ACM Transactions on Graphics (SIGGRAPH 2005). (Project page with pdf and video)
- Cooper, S. Hertzmann, A. Popović, Z. Active Learning for Real-time Motion Controllers. ACM Transactions on Graphics 26(3) (SIGGRAPH 2007) [Paper (2.4 Mb)] (project page with pdf and video)
- L. Ikemoto, O. Arikan, D. Forsyth. Generalizing Motion Edits with Gaussian Processes. Transactions on Graphics January 2009. (project page with pdf and video)
Remember: post comments on each paper you read to the appropriate page. There is a page for each paper group (one, two and three).
CHANGE: for Monday, post questions, thoughts, things you need to know in order to really understand the papers. For Wednesday, post more details about the papers you’ve read, really letting us know that you’ve understood them.
