in Assignment 1

1. Sentence:
“This paper describes a simulation system that has been developed to model the deformation and fracture of solid objects in a real-time gaming context.” (abstract)

2. Problem:
Computing the fracturing and deformation of solid objects can take large amounts of processing power, which makes it hard to do in real time in settings such as a video game.

3. Key Idea:
Computing fracturing and deformation in an efficient method while not ignoring elastic energy from when something is bent before breaking. (corotational tetrahedral finite element method?)

4.a. What the paper does:
This paper provides a way to compute fracturing of solid objects in real time on today’s consumer products.

4.b. What it could be used for:
This could be used for fast computation of solid objects being torn/damaged/destroyed directly in real-time in situations like video games.

5. Resources:
video
