Just to re-iterate what I said in class:
- Wednesday, March 20: No lecture. I will hold office hours 11-noon to answer questions.
- Friday, March 22nd: Details about handin coming soon. However, I will schedule brief (10 minute) demos to check in with everyone in the morning. These are not final demos (I know a lot can happen in those last 12 hours), but just to check in to see where things are getting to.
For the Friday thing, only one partner need to show things off (although its nice to talk to both people).
Please let me know:
- If at least one of you are available 11-noon and/or 2-3 on Friday. (let me know which time slots work, and what subset of your group)
- Where the demo would need to be. If you have a laptop and can bring it someplace in CS, or if it needs to be in a computer lab, or in your office, or …
I only need one response per group, but please CC your partner.

Whoops – I drafted this, and didn’t send it – so I have to re-do it. And its late.
This week, we’ll wrap up Assignment 5 and 6. We’ll also talk about basic skinning.
Monday, March 18 – Lecture on Skinning. Since I forgot to tell you that there was a reading to do, I don’t expect that many of you have seen it. So, if you do it after class, that’s OK. Please make the Moodle posting before class on March 20.
Wednesday, March 20 – Everyone’s minds will probably be on the project, so I won’t bother giving you a reading to do. I am not sure what we’ll do in class. A lot will depend on how far we get on Monday.
Friday, March 22 – No class. But, Assignment 6 is due. You will get instructions on what this means soon. Part of this will involve you giving me a demo during the day. While this won’t be your “final” thing, on the last day, you shouldn’t be too far off.
Next week is Spring break. When we get back, we’ll focus on picking projects for the second half of the class. Some info will be given to you so you can think about it over break.

Everyone should have gotten an email with me with some feedback on what I know about your Assignment 6.
You may also want to look at the note about expectations and grading for A5&6.
This Friday (March 15) is the Assignment 6 checkpoint. Each group must send me email (only one person needs to send it – but please CC your partner so I can “reply all”). In this not please tell me:
- What you are doing for the project. The basic idea, the methods you plan to implement, what you expect it to do, …
- A description of how you will assess it. What will you show off at the end? What do you expect the demo to be, and how will you know if its any good?
- As part of #2, give some specific test cases (what motions will it work on, …)
- A brief sense of your plan. What will you do first? What’s your fallback if things go wrong?
- A list of the pieces from Phase 1 that you still need to get to work.
This is due on Friday, March 15th. That means any time Friday. (if it’s Saturday, it’s not Friday).
I will hold office hours just to discuss projects on Friday, March 15th. I don’t know exactly how this will work with the visit day schedule (they have not informed me of when I have things to do). But I will plan for 10:45am-whenever I have to go to the visit day lunch.

After Friday’s (March 8th) big deadline (see the instructions), hard to say “but wait, there’s more”.
But: for Friday (and beyond) you need to be thinking about Assignment 6 (or assignment 5 Phase 2, if you like). If you still need help coming up with an idea, there are some readings on this page. Through the course of March 11-15, please stay in touch to develop project ideas.
As far as next week:
Monday, March 11th: Lecture on alternative representations for human motion, as well as a discussion of some issues with blending. There is a reading (with a Moodle post).
Wednesday, March 13: We’ll switch gears to talk about skinning. To get you in the spirit, I ask that you read a survey / course notes for something that will discuss what really happens in practice. No Moodle posting. But please do the reading!
Friday, March 15: No class. There will be a checkpoint on Assignment 6 – basically to send me an email and re-assure me that things are going well. Details coming soon.

Reading 12 was originally supposed to be something to help you narrow down your idea for Assignment 6 (or Phase 2 of Assignment 5). But since I didn’t get reading suggestions out to people, I am cancelling the assignment.
That said:it is important that you nail down your idea for Assignment 6. If you need ideas, or suggestions of things to read, either come to office hours or send me email.

With the motion preliminaries behind us, we can finally move on to talking about blending and graphs. But the biggest thing this week is the motion capture Assignment (assignment 5 and getting reading for assignment 6). Over the course of the week, we can try to develop assignment 6 ideas. Feel free to send me email, or come by office hours to discuss your ideas.
Monday – March4 – We’ll discuss blending and motion graphs. The motion graphs reading (with moodle writing) is due.
Wednesday March 6 – We’ll talk about using blending and graphs to do fancier things. We’ll read more about it later in the semester, but for today your reading assignment s to read about ideas for Assignment 6.
Friday – March 8 – Assignment 5 is due! You’ll need to describe what you’ve done to me, have someone peer-review your system, peer review someone else’s system, and give me your Assignment 6 ideas. Details on what you need to do are here.
The following week, you’ll dive in to Assignment 6, and we’ll shift gears a bit – we’ll transition away from doing motion processing, to consider other aspects of character animation and move on to skinning. We’ll come back to do more advanced motion synthesis later in the course.
Over the next 2 weeks, I will try to lighten the reading load so you can be more focused on the programming assignments. Famous last words: there are so many interesting things to read…
