The main purpose of this assignment is to try out some of the assignment infrastructure provided by Moodle. I hate to waste people’s time on administrative matters like this, but I think that if we spend a little time making sure the course mechanisms work smoothly, we will not need to worry about it later.
A secondary part of this assignment is to get people to say a little bit about themselves so we can start to get to know each other. This will be useful in the future since you will be working together.
The assignment has three parts. The first two are due before class on Friday, January 25th. The third part should be done shortly after (for example, by Monday the 28th). Each part is just a check/no check.
Part A: Submit something to the Assignment 0.A activity in Moodle. It doesn’t have to be much. Type a sentence or two into the assignment so I get something to “grade.”
Part B: Start a discussion topic in the Assignment 0.B forum on Moodle. In your posting say a little bit about yourself. Please say something about your graphics and animation background, your interests in animation, any animated things that you are particularly fond of, …
Part C: Post replies to at least two of the topics from part B. The system should not mark you as “completed” until you have both done the posting in part B as well as well as these two additional replies.

This site (actually a wordpress blog) is the main website for the class. It’s the main way that I (the professor) will get information to you (the class participants).
For class activities (turning things in, grading, discussions, etc), we will be using Moodle. There is a course “Moodle.” Note: this is on the University’s “innovate” server, rather than the regular server. This gives us access to a few extra features, and should be invisible to you (except that you have to look for the class in a different place).
The downside of this is that we have two separate web pages. This website (on graphics.cs.wisc.edu), and the Moodle.
Moodle is an experiment: I have never used it (or anything like it) before, but it should simplify a lot of the aspects of course management. WordPress is not very good for things like discussions.
On the other hand, WordPress has served me well as a way to broadcast information to classes. In theory, I could try this with Moodle. However, I thought I would start with experimenting with Moodle to see how well it does at the things WordPress is bad at, and then maybe migrate other things in the future.
So: be sure to check this site for announcements, descriptions of assignments and readings, etc. There will be links from this web page to the appropriate Moodle pages when you need to do things there. If I put information (such as an announcement) on the Moodle page, I will also put it here (probably with a link).
Over time, we’ll try out various aspects of Moodle and see how they work.

You have found the course website for CS777 Computer Animation, the Spring 2013 version.
As you can see there isn’t much here yet. Expect things to come into place during the week of January 11-15, so the web is in place before the first day of class on January 20th.
If you’re curious about the class, you can see links to previous course offerings – but this time will be different.

This is the News page – or a list of announcements that seem important.
Basic course info is scattered about this website. (Check the “Basic Info” category).
Note that this course will also use a Moodle site for class activities. Most of the information about the course will be on this website.
