This is a little bit of a weird reading. You aren’t supposed to actually read any papers. The goal here is for you to look at the titles and abstracts of papers to get a sense of the kinds of topics that are current in graphics research that seem interesting to you.
Back in the old days, you could do this by flipping through the pages of the proceedings (or looking at the current issues of a journal). You’d see the list of papers, you’d see pictures that catch your eye, … Unfortunately, while having pages on the web is convenient, there is no direct substitute for this physical skimming to see what catches your eye. So we’ll try to fake it.
I want you to get a sense of the kinds of topics at the top conferences, and to see what sparks your interest.
Here’s what you need to do:
1. Look through the titles/abstracts (and to extent possible, pictures) for the most recent SIGGRAPH Asia, SIGGRAPH, and SCA conferences – and maybe 1 or two others. To make this easier, here’s a place to look:
- For SIGGRAPH Asia 2012, I’ve made a page with all of the abstracts. But you might prefer the graphics papers on the web version (no abstracts, but links).
- For SIGGRAPH 2012, there is a compendium of the first pages of all the papers (beware! even after PDF optimization its 36MB) I’ve put a copy here. You might prefer just the abstracts or the graphics papers on the web version.
- For SCA ‘2012, all I have to offer is the graphics papers on the web list. So for these, you might try to make judgements based on titles alone.
- If you’re curious, you might look at Eurographics (the next best general graphics conference), or the 2011 version of these conferences.
If possible, try looking at SIGGRAPH Asia (with the abstracts), SIGGRAPH (with the 1st pages) and SCA (with just the titles). I am curious how the different ways of showing it will affect your opinions.
2. Make the following lists: (note: I totally understand that you are making quick and uniformed judgements here)
- 3-5 papers that seem related to animation that seem most interesting to you
- (optional) up to 3-5 papers that are really interesting, but you think might not be related to animation
- 3-5 papers that seem related to animation but uninteresting
- 1-3 papers that you find surprising (as in “I didn’t expect to find a paper about this”) – these might appear in other lists
3. Post these lists to Moodle. there is a forum. Please make your posting before class on Monday, February 4th. I need these in order to prepare Assignment 2.
