The Week in Vis: Week 2 (Sep 8-11)

This is the first of our weekly posts to remind you about what is going on in class this week.

Each week, I’ll make a posting (usually over the weekend) about what to expect in class for the following week. Since the weeks follow a regular pattern, this will get predictable very fast…

Since this is our first one, it comes with a little more explanation. And Labor Day made this a weird week.

The week in Vis post will appear on the Course Web but will also be posted to Canvas as an announcement. Canvas should let you know about announcements. If you like email announcements, you can configure Canvas to send them to you.

On the course web, if you look at the upper right, there is a “This week in 765” section - it should remind you of what is happening. Note: it doesn’t remind you about last week’s assignments (that you might need to turn in late).

Last week, we had reading to do (Reading 0-1) and Reading Survey 0: Introduction (due Fri, Sep 04). The late policy allows you to turn in a reading survey until an hour before the next class (Wednesday, Sep 9 for this one). The important thing is that you’ve done the reading and thought about it before class - the survey is a check of that.

This week is the second week of Welcome: What is Vis. I counted from 0 since this isn’t a full module because of the short weeks. If you didn’t read about the module last week, you should.

The content survey refers to the readings (in fact, this week, that’s all that’s on it). And the Seek and Find will give you your first exposure to this kind of assignment.

You’ll notice that the readings this week are a bit different: they are experiential readings. I really want you to look at these specific documents, for the experience of these documents. The readings are not only to convey information, but also to give you practice at dealing with different kinds of documents. In each module, there will be a historic document (as close to historic as we have in our field) and a more modern one.
