DE7 Grades
Here is how we graded the Module 7 Design Exercises
For all assignments:
- at least one grader graded each assignment. if two graders graded it, you get the codes from both graders, but the score from the higher of the two
- for each assignment there was a set of checkboxes - we didn’t always check all available checkboxes
- canvas shows the “short name” for each of the checkboxes, you can use the info below to decode them
Each design exercise was graded separately. For the final grade, we will average them all together.
DE7-1 Interaction (Video)
Video Checks:
- NO_VIDEO : No Video
- INVALID_VIDEO : Invalid Video (longer than 5mins, can’t play, …)
- ONLY_Video : ONLY Defines question/problem in video
- Video_Conveys : Video Conveys the Interaction
- Notable_Video : Notable Video - something that we should use as an exemplar
- Notable_Production : Notable production (video quality) - above and beyond
- Directing_Attention_Improvement : Could do better at directing attention in video (larger cursor, …) - not a penalty, just room for improvement
- Manual_Mix : Allows viewer to manually mix the video (good, keeping counts)
- No_Direction : Does not try to direct attention (no cursor)
- Static_Video : Video is static - doesn’t use visuals to guide attention or show any of the interaction
- SingleFrame : Video is a single image (with or without mouse to guide)
- Video_Effects : Good Use of Video Effects to show things
- Exemplar : Exemplar of using simple mechanisms to tell story in video
- Screen_and_head : Adds talking head to screenshot (added to keep track)
Description Checks:
- NO_PROBLEM : No Problem Defined (1/3 required parts)
- NO_DESCRIPTION : No Description (1/3 required parts)
- NO_RATIONALE : No Rationale (1/3 required parts)
- Minimal : Minimal - meets requirements, but not much else
- Incomplete_Description : Incomplete Description
- Incomplete_Rationale : Incomplete Rationale
- Good_Problem : Good Question: provides a notably good problem
General Kudos:
- Conveys_Design : Notable job at conveying the Design
- Conveys_Interaction : Notable job at conveying the Interaction
- Rationale : Notable Rationale for the Design
- Understands_Interaction : Conveys that the student understands interaction (terms, pros/cons, etc.)
- Novel : Novel Design - shows creativity
- Effective_Basics : Effective use of standard interactions (hover, cross-filter, selection)
- Captioned_Video : Adds captioning to the videos
- Titles : Uses title slides to help convey
- Nice_Visuals : Notably nice visuals
- Prototype_Implementation : Actually implemented prototype of interaction
Scoring - we chose from the following list
- 94 : (94) exceptional (give comment why)
- 92 : (92) great - shows spark
- 90 : (90) no deficiencies (solid, meets spirit of the assignment)
- 88 : (88) deficient in one way, or just minimally meets requirements
- 86 : (86) good - deficient in two ways
- 84 : (84) good - really lacking
DE7-2 Design School
Second source reading:
- has_source : Has a good source
- source_takeaways : Has a few takeaways
- New_Source : Has a source grader wasn’t aware of
- Apply : Talks about how it applies (optional)
- Great_Discussion : Excels at describing the takeaways or application
Example of Good Design
- has_good : Has a Good Example
- has_williams : Has a Williams’ Principle
- has_other : Has a Principle from Other Sources
- insight : Provides insight beyond minimum
Example of Bad Design
- has_example : Has a Valid Example
- has_improvement : Improvement is better
- has_williams : Has a Williams’ Principle
- has_other : Has a Principle from Other Sources
- insight : Provides insight beyond minimum
- Good_Recreation : Particularly good re-creation (keeps spirit of original, effort in actual design)
- Fake_Bad : Bad example is from a bad examples source - not a negative, but keeping track
DE7-3 Do-Overs
- start : Has a valid design to improve
- has_improvement : Has an improved design
- different : Result is a different story (not an improvement of the first)
- rationale : Explains the improvement
- principles : Explains principles used
- good_result : Result is a good visualization (worthy of an A on its own)
- good_improvement : Improvement is good (shows addition of principles to make things better)
- FLAWED : has a fundamental flaw that violates basic things
