Policy Overview
Summarizing the policy related contents of the Syllabus …
Class Rhythm: Class is divided into 2 week modules (the last module will be 3 weeks). Assignments are due at the end of the module: we expect you to complete all the work for the module within the 2 weeks.
Parts of Class: Every module will have lectures, a seek and find (a type of assignment), a content surveys, a class survey, and design exercises. There may be optional discussions.
Communications: The course uses the course web to share information. Announcements will be made via Canvas (make sure to set up alerts). Emergency announcements may be made via email. Communicate with course staff via email (please CC both instructor and TA). Use the Missed Class Form and Regrade Request Form when appropriate.
Class Meetings (attendance): You are expected to attend class (11am-12:15 MW, 2522 Morgridge). Bring drawing supplies. If you miss class, please fill out the Missed Class Form.
In Class Experiences: Many classes will have “in-class-experiences” (ICEs) that will be turned in on paper. We collect ICEs to track participation. If you miss an ICE you cannot make it up. Do not cheat (turning in an assignment that you did not experience).
Readings: All readings will be provided online. Students are expected to do the required readings before the end of the module.
Grading (class components): Grades will be a weighted average of the graded assignments including Seek and Finds, Content Surveys, and Design Exercises. Completion of ungraded class components(e.g., Class Surveys, In Class Experiences, and optional discussions) will be counted to measure engagement. Final grades will be influenced by engagement. See Syllabus (Grading) for more details.
Late Policy: Assignments are due on a specified day (usually the Friday at the end of a module), Madison time. 12:01am Saturday is not Friday. Late assignments are accepted with penalties (different assignment types have specific policies). There are hard cutoffs after which assignments cannot be accepted (generally a few days after the due date). See Syllabus (Late Policy) for more details.
Collaboration: We hope to foster a collaborative environment where students learn together. Students are encouraged to discuss aspects of class with their peers. Students are expected to substantially complete assignments on their own (or in assigned groups, when permitted). Students should give proper attribution for work they did not do.
Use of Generative AI: Use AI tools (ChatGPT, Co-Pilot, etc.) to help you in your learning, not to do the assignments for you. Treat them like another student: you can get them to help you, but you are responsible for your own work. Give them proper credit / attribution. Don’t claim their work as your own. See Course Policy on the use of Generative AI Tools for more details.
