Welcome to CS765 Data Visualization!

This is a message for students enrolled in class before the class starts. A link to this message will be sent to the class mailing list (usually I don’t do that, but this is not a normal week).

Welcome to CS765 Data Visualization for the Fall of 2024.

I am announcing this message by email, because not everyone will have Canvas set up (this is where announcements usually go), and I want to reach everyone before the class starts.

Three things:

  1. There is a lot of demand for this class. The class is full, and there is a long waiting list. Please have a look at the Course Website, in particulat What Is This Class and Why? and make sure this class is what you want. This class is not for everyone. I won’t be offended if you drop.

    • Many students will end up dropping the class - it’s better if they do this sooner, rather than later, so that we can give the space to someone else.
    • If you do not expect to come to class “nearly all of the time”, please do not take the class.
  2. Please do the things on the Getting Started page (and where it sends you). It will probably answer a lot of your questions. It’s better to read this sooner, rather than later.

  3. Please come to class on time on Wednesday (room 1221 Comp Sci, 11am, Wednesday Sept 4) - the way the room is set up, it is disruptive if you try to crawl over people to find a seat. Please bring “art supplies” to class (pens or pencils) - we will do a drawing exercise the first day. See the Class Meetings (attendance policy) for more info.

If you have questions, it’s OK to send me email (see the Communications Policy). A warning: I will be traveling over the long holiday weekend and will be slower than usual at responding to things.
