Example Answers to The Questions

Give an example of nominal and categorical measurements

Both are unordered sets, the distinction comes in the form of set size. Nominal data are infinite sets (think student names), each element of the set is generally unique. Categorical data are finite sets (think student departments), each category generally contains a “class” of items.

Give an example of something that is a rational quantity

The defining characteristic of Ratio data is that division makes sense - if you can say a thing is twice as much as something else, like weight or distance

Give an example of a quantity that is interval, but not rational

Something along the lines of years - it is interval, but talking about division of years makes no sense (2020CE isn’t 1010CE*2)

Give an example of something that is ordered but not interval

Something along the lines of a set with alphabetical order (think books on shelves, a student roster, etc.)

Determine what kind of coat to bring on a 1 day trip to Chicago tomorrow based on a weather forecast (using a visualization of it). Describe an abstract version of this task.

There are varying levels of abstraction and a wide array of acceptable answers here, for example, ‘Query/Search for a specific element of interest (whether it will rain or not)’ or ‘Find min/max temp (how thick of a coat you need)’
