Proposal Feedback

Rather than giving limited feedback on each proposal, I am providing overall feedback based on what I saw. Effectively, you can see the feedback that I give to everyone. There is a page of comments that apply to all themes, as well as some more theme-specific comments.

The numbered items are things that at least one project made me think of. For each project, I picked a few (but it isn’t necessarily exhaustive - I didn’t pick all the comments that apply). Each student will get a list of some of the comments that apply to them.

Each student will receive a list of codes that “apply to them” - this list is not exhaustive. If you see “0.6, 3.3” that means number 6 on the “all theme” list and number 3 from the theme 3 list came to mind while reading the proposal - but other codes might apply as well.

Seeing the feedback for others might help you.

Also look at the Project Theme Discussions on Canvas. And contribute! Especially if you find a resource, or have an idea you want to bounce off of others, …

Feedback for All Themes

in Proposal Feedback
Comments that apply to all themes. Be sure to read the comments for your specific theme as well. The topics were intentionally open - to gives students enough freedom to be creative. I definitely had some things in mind - I was trying to avoid steering students towards these things. But, I am a little biased because these are influencing my expectations. When I write here… I may make up some example “baseline” ideas (simple ideas that I have off the top of my head) to give you a sense of the kinds of things that are possible. Read more…

Theme 4 (Part Whole Relationships) Comments

in Proposal Feedback
Comments that apply to theme 4. Be sure to read the comments for “all themes” as well. There was no equivalent to this theme last year. I don’t even have good suggestions on what might be similar to suggest what to read. If you find something, please put it into the Canvas discussion! Some of the thoughts came up from specific groups, but apply to everyone (see #10,14). Generally, in this category most of the comments apply broadly. Read more…

Theme 3 (Predictors) Comments

in Proposal Feedback
Comments that apply to theme 3. Be sure to read the comments for “all themes” as well. There was no equivalent to this theme last year. You might want to look at theme 2 for other ideas since it has some similarities. There is a lot of research on visualization tools for working with classifiers/regressors. You don’t have to look very hard to find something. Finding something good might be trickier. Read more…

Theme 2 (Maps and Cluster) Comments

in Proposal Feedback
Comments that apply to theme 2. Be sure to read the comments for “all themes” as well. We had a variant of this theme for last year’s project. Here is a link (with some good references): https://pages.graphics.cs.wisc.edu/765-21/assigns/dc2-embeddings/. Some extra readings from last year (found by students - I haven’t looked at all of these): 2021 Readings L. G. Nonato and M. Aupetit, “Multidimensional Projection for Visual Analytics: Linking Techniques with Distortions, Tasks, and Layout Enrichment,” in IEEE Transactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics, vol. Theme 1 (Subgroups) Comments

in Proposal Feedback
Comments that apply to theme 1. Be sure to read the comments for “all themes” as well. A key thing in my mind is that the tool should help the user consider many different potential subgroups simultaneously - to help them figure out good ways to divide the population. Last year, there was a similar project theme - it included some recommended readings. 2021’s Grouper Project Theme Here is an anti-design (exactly what I am not thinking of): the system could allow the user to set filters to define a group, and tell the user how many samples are in the group.
