DC1 Hand-in Instructions

Design Challenge 1: One Dataset / Four Stories will be turned in as a Canvas Quiz (see DC1 Handin: Design Exercise 4 (due Mon, Oct 18)). Unfortunately, Canvas isn’t the most flexible tool for assignment handin, so we want to warn you some things about it.

The main part of the handin are the 4 designs (each for one story), and 1 alternate design (that tells the same story as one of the first 4). You will turn each one of these in as a separate PDF file. Please note:

  1. They must be PDF files. If you need help converting something to a PDF file, please ask Abhay on Piazza.
  2. They must be self contained: they should have a title and caption. Even if you put the title and caption elsewhere as well.
  3. They must not have your name on it. We will show them to other students anonymously.
  4. The PDF files must be named “1.pdf”, “1A.pdf”, “2.pdf”, “3.pdf” and “4.pdf”. 1A should be the “alternate version” of visualization 1. Otherwise, the ordering doesn’t matter. Be sure to name your files correctly.
  5. For the design that has an alternate (it is 1, and the alternate is 1A), if you think one is clearly better than the other, make it be the non-alternate.

You will turn these 5 files in as upload questions. Unfortunately, there is no way for you to preview them in Canvas.

Other aspects of the handin will be given as Canvas type-in questions. This means that the rationales will be given in Canvas text boxes.

We strongly advise you to write your answers outside of Canvas and copy/paste them into the type-in boxes. To help you do that, here are the questions:

  1. Did you process or augment the data? (if so, please describe what you did)
  2. What tools did you use for this phase of the assignment?
  3. Which data set did you use (4-way multiple choice)?
  4. Please upload your first visualization. It must have the filename “1.pdf”.
  5. Please give your rationale for your design (for 1.pdf)
  6. Please upload your alternate design for the first visualization. It must have the filename “1A.pdf”.
  7. Please give your rationale for this alternate design (1A.pdf). Describe why you think it is (or is not) more effective than the original (1.pdf)
  8. Please upload the next visualization. It must have the filename “2.pdf”.
  9. Please give your rationale for your design (for 2.pdf)
  10. Please upload the next visualization. It must have the filename “3.pdf”.
  11. Please give your rationale for your design (for 3.pdf)
  12. Please upload the next visualization. It must have the filename “3.pdf”.
  13. Please give your rationale for your design (for 3.pdf)
  14. If there is any “over-arching story” or connection between the 4 stories/visualizations above, please describe it. It is OK to say “these are 4 independent stories/visualizations from the same data set.”
  15. If you have anything else you would like to tell us about your assignment, please do it here.

Also note: Ignore it if Canvas tells you that a question is incorrect. Canvas cannot autograde these asssignments. Also Canvas might get confused trying to figure out how 100 points come from 14 questions. It doesn’t but we can’t tell Canvas to trust us to do the grading.
