Drawing (Art Supplies)

In this class, you will need some form of “art supplies” in order to draw.

This class will require you to draw. Pen/Pencil/Marker on paper really is superior for the “creative” sketching process. In person, I require people to bring “art supplies” and do not let people do the exercises using a digital pen (because we need to do things on paper to show others). For the online class, digital drawing is possible. It is more convenient (since you don’t have to scan), but more expensive and not always as good.

Everyone must have “art supplies” so they can draw (multiple colors of pens/pencils, paper, …). We will use these for the various design exercises over the course of the semester. I recommend a set of colored pens, pencils, or markers. Everyone has a personal preference. Mine keep changing.

You will need some way to get the paper into digital form - preferably in “real time” (since you’ll be doing drawing exercises as part of class). See Scanning.

If you like to draw on a screen and have an appropriate device (using a mouse, or your finger on a touch tablet is NOT good enough), you can do this. The devices have gotten a lot better (I have an iPad with an Apple Pencil, a Microsoft Surface, and an Huion pen/tablet/monitor). They don’t quite recreate the experience of drawing on paper, but it is convenient.

Using a mouse to draw is not an acceptable solution.

With any of these approaches, make sure you have the appropriate software in place to create images and get them uploaded. See Scanning.
