You need the ability to do good audio in an online discussion (microphone/speaker).

Since we’ll be talking to each other in discussions, it is important that we can hear each other well. Having good audio - so that people can hear you clearly - is a courtesy to those who are listening to you.

I strongly encourage you to have a headset with microphone. Some laptops have decent microphones, but having a microphone close to your mouth (at a fixed distance) is even better.

  1. If you move around when you talk, the microphone moves with you, so the levels and audio quality stay constant.
  2. The close microphone can do a better job at cancelling out other noises in the environment, so everyone else doesn’t hear things.
  3. Listening via headphones helps focus your attention on the one thing you are listening to.
