On Thursday, September 13, we’ll have a discussion of "what is a game" and "what is a toy" (which will also involve discussing "what is fun" and "what is play").
To prepare for this conversation, I would everyone to do the following assignment. You must complete this by noon on September 13th (so we can look at the results and prepare for class).
- Make sure you’ve done Reading 2. At least Chapter 3 of Schell, but preferably more.
- Think about fun things you’ve done recently. If your life is boring, you might think of things that you’ve done less recently. If you’re totally stuck, think of things you want to do.
- Specifically, think of:
- A game that you’ve played recently that was fun (for you). Why is this game a game (according to the definitions)?
- A toy that you’ve played with recently that was fun (for you). Why is this a toy, but not a game? Did you do something to make it a game? (or can you think of something)
- Something fun that you’ve done that did not involve a toy or game.
Feel free to give more than 1 answer to each question. But please think of at least 1.
Write your response to this as a post (new topic) on the forum in the “Assignment 1” Board. I’ve given an answer as an example.
