Grading https://pages.graphics.cs.wisc.edu/638-f15/2015/11/12/grading/ Thu, 12 Nov 2015 23:04:33 +0000 http://pages.graphics.cs.wisc.edu/638-f15/?p=214

The grader has graded a number of assignments – a random sampling of the readings, the first 3 programming puzzles, and the first programming “assignment”. There’s a total of 8.

The scoring scheme is:

  • 0 = didn’t turn anything in
  • 1 = unacceptable for some reason (these are pretty rare)
  • 2 = check
  • 3 = solid check / check plus
  • 4 = notable assignment (rarely given)

If the first 8 graded assignments are indicative of what will happen in the next weeks, we can see how things are going. Based on the previous standards for passing (described here) you may be in trouble if:

  • Your median score is 2 or below
  • You do not have 6 or more of the assignments with grades > 1.

If you’re on either of these lines, you would be OK, but you should be careful (don’t miss too many more assignments). If you’re below these lines, you should make sure that you don’t miss any more assignments.

The Week in 638: Week 10 (Nov 9-13) https://pages.graphics.cs.wisc.edu/638-f15/2015/11/04/the-week-in-638-week-10-nov-9-13/ Wed, 04 Nov 2015 18:01:40 +0000 http://pages.graphics.cs.wisc.edu/638-f15/?p=191

This past week, we moved rooms – and a few people found it. Remember, from now on we’ll meet in room 1325 Computer Sciences.

Coming up:

  • Reading 8 was due – but you should do the extra parts (remember, each person is supposed to do 3 postings). And if you haven’t done the reading, you should. There is no new reading for this week, so now is a good time to catch up.
  • Programming Puzzle 4 will be due next week (11/9 – initial posting). Post an initial solution at the beginning of the week, and work with your discussion group to improve it over the next week. The goal is for each discussion group to get 100% of the people to have good projects!
  • In class on 10/10 we’ll talk about selection oriented programming and jQuery.
  • Programming Puzzle 3 is history, but if you didn’t do it, you should.

I am hoping to get more grading feedback to students in the next week or two.

Clarification on the handin directories… https://pages.graphics.cs.wisc.edu/638-f15/2015/10/23/clarification-on-the-handin-directories/ Fri, 23 Oct 2015 22:45:41 +0000 http://pages.graphics.cs.wisc.edu/638-f15/?p=173

To be a little clearer:

The handin directories are in the course‘s afs directory, not your personal directory.

So my handin directory for puzzle 2 is:

/p/course/cs638-gleicher/public/html/handin2015/Puzzle2/gleicher

We have not made handin directories for Puzzle 3 (JSBin links are fine for that). We’ll make the for Puzzle 4 (once I figure out what Puzzle 4 will be)

Peer Review – it is a Canvas problem https://pages.graphics.cs.wisc.edu/638-f15/2015/10/01/peer-review-it-is-a-canvas-problem/ Thu, 01 Oct 2015 13:48:14 +0000 http://pages.graphics.cs.wisc.edu/638-f15/?p=111

The good news is… Canvas technical support has confirmed the behavior we were seeing with assignment dates and peer review is not right.

The bad news is… They are working on debugging it.

For those of you who had problems with rubrics not showing up (or coming and going): they are trying to blame outdated web browsers. I don’t believe this is the case. But, if Canvas ever acts up again, please check their “list of supported browsers.”

The week in 638: Week 3 September 21-25 https://pages.graphics.cs.wisc.edu/638-f15/2015/09/18/the-week-in-638-week-3-september-21-25/ Fri, 18 Sep 2015 15:51:11 +0000 http://pages.graphics.cs.wisc.edu/638-f15/?p=87

Last week, we had our first real week, with a reading assignment, a discussion, and a lecture with some simple stuff (types) and some stuff that might be harder the first time you hear it (closures). If you didn’t get closures the first time around, you can check the notes or even watch the video from the lecture. But we’ll talk about them more in the coming weeks.

This coming week, we’ll talk about objects.

  • Your reading assignment is Reading 2: Objects. Remember to post something to the discussion. If there’s something unclear to you, that might be a good place to ask. I may not see it, but if someone else can’t answer maybe it will remind people to ask in class.
  • In Lecture, we’ll start to talk about objects. But some of the functional concepts (like closures) will come back.
  • You have Programming Assignment 0 due – this is just to get you to try programming. Might be a good time to try writing something with a closure.
  • On Wednesday night (for Thursday morning), you will be assigned to peer review 3 other people’s programs. Canvas should do this automatically. You can take a week to do the reviews, and this time there may not be much to say (since the program requirements are minimal)

Hopefully, everyone has resolved their enrollment issues and has switched to pass/fail. If you haven’t you may not like the grade you get.
