DC1 Redux
I know you were expecting Design Challenge 3 (since we skipped Design Challenge 2) - but first, we’re bringing back DC1.
In this assignment, we will give you a chance to revisit DC1, to allow you to learn from the feedback that you have gotten. Note that this counts separately from DC1 - we will grade it separately, and give you a letter grade. Since it’s a 1 week assignment, it will count 1/4 as much as DC1 and DC3.
For Monday, November 9th, you may turn in another design that presents the same story as one of your designs.
The Re-Submission Rules
Everyone must turn in an assignment (or you will get a 0 - and we don’t drop the lowest DC grade).
Providing that you follow the rules (and your handin has all parts) and provide a decent self-critique, you will not get a grade lower than your DC1 grade. (for the purposes of this assignment, your DC1 grade is the grade given for your designs - which doesn’t include the peer critiques).
If you are happy with your work on DC1, pick one of your existing designs, and give a self-critique. Remember, a critique can discuss what is good about a design. Explain how the choices that you made support the story that you are trying to tell. Note: if you want to make another design for the same story, you can (just follow the instructions for #4). You will basically get the same grade as you did for DC1 overall (at least as good, if you do a decent job at self-critique). Your PDF should have:
- the 1 page design, with captions
- up to a page of “self-critique” - please clearly state the story that you were trying to tell in the visualization
If you are unhappy with your performance on DC1, pick one of the designs that you received negative feedback on and redesign it in a way that addresses the feedback. Your design should tell the same story as the original design, except that it should do a better job at it. If the problem in your design was that it did not have a clear story, you should refine the story - but do not tell a completely different story. The idea here is that you are making a re-design, a new design that addresses the feedback you received on the original design. Your PDF should have pages with:
- the 1 page original design, with captions
- the 1 page new design (the re-design), with captions
- a description that provides a comparative critique. Please clearly state the story that you were trying to tell, and the choices made in your new design.
Your grade is based on the improvements that you make to the design, and how well you articulate the improvements. The baseline is your overall score on DC1 (you will at least get that). Your best bet is to pick a design from DC1 that you can make good improvements in a redesign.
If you did well on DC1, this assignment shouldn’t be too much effort. If you did not do well on DC1, this is an opportunity to fix things a little (since the grade will be averaged as part of your Design Challenges grade).
Note: It may be helpful to look at the list of codes (common comments) we gave to DC1 designs on the DC1 Grading Info page. Even if we didn’t give you a comment, you can see the kinds of things we were looking for
Note: If you have problems with part/whole relationships, review the
Treemaps videos.
You should turn your assignment in at DC1-5: Redux.
You should also look at your peer critiques, as these may also suggest ways for you to improve your designs. The DC1 Peer Critiques are available in the folder on Canvas. The designs that were critiquedare also in Canvas.
